Day 64
Late night...can´t sleep. I just read Heather´s comment on today (you are quick on the draw babe!).....but its true. I would expect more rustic as well...but Punta Arenas is a very metropolitan city. They even have teenagers hanging out at the disco!
But, what I could not stop thinking about today is......think of how hard it was for us to get here. And imagine what it took to build those buildings here over 150 years ago!
No planes, no roads.....the ships had to bring everything including the architects and artisans. And to think they can only really work outside here two months per year. What a courageous and incredible undertaking! If you ever get a chance to read a book on Sarah Bruan....do! I can´t wait to pick one up when I get home.
Love you all......goodnight!

WOW! Absolutely amazing. I sadly don't remember the Shackleton story but will be looking it up while I'm on conference calls today (I didn't love history in high school).
I can't get over the pictures. How large is this island full of penguins? How cold is it the rest of the year?
You must be in heaven! Of all the traveling you have done....is this your favorite trip/place to visit?
Lots of love,
Paula and Dave

You have to wonder what possed people to go there? And looking at the buildings and such these are folks with sensible good taste. Hmmm. No you have me curious, thank goodness for the google!

You'll never believe what was today's feature picture on Wikipedia.org..... The Megellanic penguin. You can go to wikipedia to see the picture.

Here's what the article said:
The Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is a South American penguin, breeding in coastal Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands, with some migrating to Brazil. It is the most numerous of the Spheniscus penguins. Its nearest relatives are the African Penguin, the Humboldt Penguin and the Galápagos Penguin

I am sorry I have not posted. I just want you to know that when I read your blog, it is an escape for me. I am enjoying hearing about your adventures (only the good ones. Betsy, I can just imagine how you might be getting when things are not going quite as planned - although, since I know you made it through, it adds a bit of comic relief).
You don't know this, but I am in a new job now and hearing of your stories in these exotic locations makes my wheels turn to book programs there.
Keep having fun, being safe and sending your wonderful stories!
Scotty

Where DO you go to next, when you are at the end of the earth? Happy New Year and much love as you continue your fantastic family odyssey!!
