Day 28
Salt Flats to the Desert
Tahua to San Pedro Quemez, Bolivia
After another hour of driving we left the white plains of salt behind and entered the desert. We spend the day driving, passing through quite town that seemed to have 10 times as many llama as people. We visited caves found only two years ago and did hiking along the mountains.
It was a beautiful relaxing day.

We past fields of Quinoa and pastures of animals. But, the packpackers had disapeared and we felt as if the world of tourism had been left far behind. These towns do not boast a cafe or store or even a place to buy water. We ate lunch at the back of our truck and passed the time discusing politics with Oslwaldo. Bryce of course tried to convince him that playing gameboy was much more interesting than talk of corrupt governments and drug infested territories. I think by afternoon he may have convinced him!
Our hotstel this night was Tayka de Piedra in a small town of 50 inhabitants, four roosters, 60 llamas, and one huge ostridge, the only inhabitant of the park bench in the square.
Bryce was terribly disapointed this night to discover there were no kittens...but they quickly remedied the problem by finding us two pets.

The baby ostridges were 8 weeks old and in Bryce´s words "Super Adorable!"
The hotel was beautiful. Completely made of local stone with soft beds and generous courtyards heated with solar energy. You get the feeling they have not simply made these hostels out of local materials because it is convenient, but more because they want to showcase their local artistry. The hostel truely was beautiful. But, once again...we were the only ones there. I would call it bizzaroland...if it were not so sad. The Bolivians have obviously put time energy and love into building these comfortable oasis in the hope that travelers will come. It appears as of yet they have been unsuccessful.
